Blood tea and Red String is a whimsical yet creepy stop motion horror movie with no dialogue. It feels like something out of a fairy tale but an older one. It's about a group of woodland creatures that find a corpse and start treating it like a doll. There's also period imagery. I know sounds weird. But trust me, it's one of a kind. The character designs also are creative & range from genuinely cute to creepy.
I got into this because of some discord friends. What can I say about this? It's goofy, dramatic, gorey, and mysterious. It's about a man cursed to have a lizard head who lost his memory. Now he kills random wizards, searching for the guy who cursed him, with the help with his friend, Nikaido. The characters would be terrible people in real life, but the way they're written they come off as lovable dorks at times. There's also a theme of identity & the power of friendship even (yes, I know).
Hausu, or House (not to be confused with the American horror comedy remake of the same name), is a supernatural horror movie about some teens who go vacation at a haunted house. Others have talked about the themes of war and how the past haunts our present. But one thing I'd like to add to the discussion is how it's simulatenously whimsical yet creepy. They even use music that feels straight out of a sitcom's opening at one point. Another film that has this vibe is Blood Tea & Red String which is more fairy tale-esque.
